What It Means to Publicly Follow Jesus Christ

At Indian Springs Baptist Church, we believe baptism is an important step in following Jesus. Jesus Himself was baptized (Matthew 3:13–17). At the end of His earthly ministry, He commanded His disciples to make disciples of all nations and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). From the beginning of His ministry to the end, Jesus affirmed the importance of baptism for those who trust in Him. The early church continued this practice (Acts 2).

Baptism is not required for salvation. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone. However, baptism is required for membership at ISBC. If you have repented of your sins and trusted Christ but have not been baptized by immersion, your next step is to be baptized.

We respect those who were sprinkled or christened as infants. Dedicating a child to the Lord is a meaningful spiritual decision. However, the Bible does not teach that infant baptism brings salvation. Scripture shows baptism as a response to personal faith. For this reason, we follow the New Testament example of baptism by immersion after salvation.

Common Questions & Answers About Baptism

Is baptism required to become a Christian?2026-02-16T14:23:54-05:00

No. Baptism does not make you a Christian. Faith in Jesus does. Baptism is a symbol, much like a wedding ring. A ring shows that someone is married, but it does not make them married. In the same way, baptism shows that you belong to Christ.

Is baptism really a command?2026-02-16T14:23:36-05:00

Yes. Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them…” (Matthew 28:19). Baptism is not just a church tradition. It is part of the command Jesus gave to His followers. While faith is personal, it is not meant to be private. Baptism is one way you publicly share your faith.

Why do you baptize by immersion?2026-02-16T14:23:16-05:00

Colossians 2:12 teaches that baptism symbolizes being buried with Christ and raised to new life. Going under the water represents death to sin. Rising out of the water represents new life in Christ. The word “baptize” means to immerse. Because the New Testament shows baptism by immersion, we follow that pattern. The only exception is when a believer is physically unable to be immersed.

What is baptism?2026-02-16T14:10:30-05:00

According to Scripture, sprinkling or christening as an infant is not the same as believer’s baptism. Baptism follows a personal decision to trust Jesus. Since infants cannot make that decision, the Bible presents baptism as something done after a person understands the Gospel and responds in faith.

Your Next Step of Faith

Baptism is how you publicly express your faith in Jesus Christ. Through baptism, you declare that Jesus has forgiven your sins and given you new life. As Romans 6:4 teaches, we are buried with Christ through baptism and raised to walk in new life.
